Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Unit Code and Application changed. Elements and Performance Criteria simplified with Element 1 removed Foundation Skills field populated. Range of Conditions removed with relevant information moved to Knowledge Evidence. Assessment Requirements clarified with generic foundation skills statements moved to appropriate section and duplication with Performance Criteria removed. Supersedes and is equivalent to MSTFD5003 Analyse fit model.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse and select the fit model used to present sample garments and develop garment fit and size standard. It applies to representations that are required in the design, manufacture and retail of garments to ensure that the targeted customer population is addressed in size range and appropriate data is obtained from research. This data also provides a solid basis for design, pattern development and garment construction for a sizing system.

This unit applies to patternmakers and designers.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan to analyse fit model

1.1 Establish intended purpose of and market for design from work information

1.2 Interpret design brief and select sizing system and fit model to represent target population

1.3 Identify need for communication with others involved in the fit process and liaise accordingly

2. Measure fit model

2.1 Establish and mark body reference points using required tools and equipment

2.2 Take and record accurate body measurements

2.3 Analyse measurements for fit implications and discuss with design development team

2.4 Assess body characteristics and compare to standard body definition used by the workplace

2.5 Identify unique features, assess for potential problems in fit and record all information

3. Finalise and check fit model

3.1 Identify types of dress forms or 3D avatars available to designers and technicians and evaluate options according to resources

3.2 Compare to fit model and select appropriate representation for use in product development

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • Reading skills to interpret design brief
  • Writing skills to record factual information in workplace records
  • Oral communication skills to liaise with design and production team members
  • Numeracy skills to take and record accurate body measurements.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • plan and implement the process of analysing the fit model for garments designed for at least two different target markets.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • sizing systems for different body types
  • characteristics of different target markets and relevant sources for information about those characteristics, including:
  • age
  • gender
  • size, body characteristics
  • people potentially involved in the process of analysing the fit model
  • tools and equipment for the fit process
  • body characteristics for consideration, including:
  • posture
  • genetic, developmental and structural influences
  • shape classifications, including hourglass, rectangular, pear and inverted triangle
  • comparative human body measurements
  • shoulder slope (raised, normal and sloping)
  • body sway and postural asymmetry (according to lower and upper body)
  • proportions (short or long-waisted and mid-body shortness)
  • body measurements that may need to be taken, how they are taken and how the measurements are used, including those related to:
  • height and weight
  • body reference points
  • levels measurements (crown, shoulder, arm hole and leg hole, bust or chest, waist, hip, crotch and knee)
  • girth measurements
  • horizontal measurements
  • vertical measurements
  • cup size
  • shoulder angle
  • seat prominence
  • unique features that may impact design and production, including:
  • common postural faults
  • prominent features, including protruding areas
  • spinal and pelvic rotation
  • foot alignment
  • arm types
  • leg types
  • neck length
  • recording and reporting practices for information gathered.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • a fit model
  • a design brief
  • measuring and fitting tools and equipment.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
